Glossop Poor Law Union

Two-part, large rolled map, paper on a canvas backing. Plan 1 depicts the northern part of the Union and its dimensions are 8.5m x 1.83. Plan 2 is the southerly portion and is slightly smaller at 8.5m x 1.52m. Plot boundaries are marked and have been numbered; each township has a separate numbering sequence. It is assumed that the numbering relates to a rate assessment volume but this has not been identified. Buildings have been marked and are tinted pink. Revisions have been made; houses more recent than 1857 have been marked in black and are numbered in red. See CD/66

Overseers' accounts 1848-1868; Valuation list, 1921

From 1834, with the passing of the Poor Law Amendment Act, parishes in England and Wales began to join poor law unions, for the more efficient administration of relief. The Shardlow Union was formed in 1837. By 1848, it consisted of 46 separate parishes/townships, 33 of which were in Derbyshire, the remainder in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. These included Long Eaton and Sawley.
