1 - Letter - Richard Purslen in London to Antony Gell - 2 months ago Mr Haywode died of the plague - last Wednesday the writer and family all in great doubt lest they should have broken up comynce - the cause was Mr Babyngton who loves to `solas' himself abroad and came home and was sick - Mr Pryncypall sent his water to a `vicisson' [physician] who said he had the plague but offered to warrant him if Mr Principal gave him 4s - Mr Babynton kept his chamber 2 days - now he is well again 16 Mar - [16th cent]
2 - Letter - Laurens Beresford of Alstonefield [Staffordshire] to Antony Gell - please deliver the enclosed to Dr Parkesbee and desire him to send his mind to them again - the writer desires him to be present on the court day - thanks him for the subpoena - send word by the bearer where the subpoena for his sister Kateryn is - [16th cent]
3 - Letter - John Cocke at Tideswell to [Thomas] Gell - whereas Robert Pursglove, late Bishop of Hull, was buried in Tideswell chancel with a black cloth hanging on his grave for one year and was taken away by the vicar at the year's end and a like cloth was hung on the grave of Sampson Meverell and was taken away by the parish clerk, George Marshall, whereat James Pendleton, the vicar's brother, is much aggrieved, and as he believes the same should belong to the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield, please confer with Mr Pendleton on the matter and ask by what right he removed the cloth, and write to George Marshall likewise 12 Mar 1584/5 - 1585
4 - Letter - George Tompson in London to Thomas Gell - at the request of his friend he came to deal with him for his wool and concluded a bargain for some part. Writer has talked with the Italians who say they will buy none yet - they are offered lead by many merchants at £7 6 8d the fother but the plumbers will give £7-10s when they need it - writer put Mr Banes in mind of Mr Lowe's and Gell's wool but he said flatly he would buy none of it because the goodness is altered so much - his lord and his company stay 7 days longer because the States of the Lowe Countrie are come over - letters are brought to the Council of late of the great provision in Spain for England and a messenger has come from the Prince of Parma 5 Feb 1587/8 - 1588
5 - Letter - Frauncis Tunstid to [Thomas] Gell - writer has earnest business for some of his friends which he did not expect when he came from Bakewell - do not be displeased at his absence and allow him to stay until Tuesday next - if Gell has any business for him in the Peak, send him word and it shall be done - please let writer's brother John have custody of Gell's hawk, he will do the best he can to her 21 Aug - 1591

8 - Letter - Antony Gell to Robert Whythall at Sturston - writer is so bold of him as to put him in commission for Gell, being in Chancery against William Blackwall - writer would be glad to have the commission sit before Christmas, on Tuesday or Thursday next - writer thinks the most convenient place would be Wirksworth 3 Dec - reply from Whythall - writer will not fail to be with Gell the Thursday before Christmas - 1581
9 - Letter - John Leake to Mr Gell - has asked the tenants to be ready to deliver Gell the survey of the laudes as Mr Hutchingson lately died seised of in that country - requests Gell to deliver to the bearer the same survey signed with his hand so that the writer may certify it to the Court of Wards - if Gell makes the survey to the uttermost of the value, Gell will greatly hinder the ward and displeasure the writer 12 Apr - 1574
