14 - S Follambe to Thomas Gell - one of those who were at Newbold when the robbery of William Moore should have been committed, has confessed that there were a dozen thieves who planned to rob Gell in the spring - by having a servant admit them at night - 4 apprehended, of whom 2 committed to Derby jail - the others bailed upon good sureties - they came from London to Leicester and meant to rob Gell's brother had he not died when he did. 19 Dec - 1583
15 - Richard Baynes to Thomas Gell - troubles since Gell's departure, sinister practices of Mr Walthall and his adherents - sought to prefer the sale of Gell's lead and although ordered not to sell to Walthall he agreed to do so, so long as Walthall paid as much as anyone else - Walthall seemed to agree but eventually refused, so he sought to sell to others - Walthall used all means to hinder him and brought a case in the mayor's court to have the lead confiscated, alleging that it was foreign - other witnesses were Wyggen the warfinger and his son but the case was in his favour - has not yet sold the lead but is negotiating. 4 Apr - 1586

17 - Antony Tunstyd to Antony Gell at Clements Inn - asks Gell to send on Tunstyd's father a letter and to write to his mother in his name to ask her to send 2 pair of horse cloths as he lacks nothing but money - his illness has cost him £4 more than his wages - asks Gell to get his cousin Blakewall of the Inner Temple to help him to some worshipfulman's service, spiritual or temporal. 30 Apr - [16th cent]

24 - Godfrey Wolstoncroft at Arundell House over St Clement Danes to Thomas Gell - asks Gell to arbitrate with his tenants - has let Steven all his houses so that Steven is to pay the whole rent - sends a lately published book - pray remind Steven of the money he owes - there are 3 books in one lately published concerning the Duke of Norfolk and the Queen of Scots. 25 Oct - [16th cent]

26 - Thomas Gell at Bakewell to his brother Antony Gell at Hopton - has spoken with Edward Walker and one of Mr Manner's men and the matter of the mills is deferred until next term when they must bring in 6 witnesses. 19 Jul - 1582

30 - William Sacheverell at Grays Inn to his brother in law Thomas Gell at Hopton - has received the letters by the carrier Cockin, and the commission is put in - marvels that Martin Martiall, knowing the answer and the Dean, will follow it - will speak to Martiall tomorrow and it they cannot agree, will bring him into Chancery or the Court of Requests - the Earl of Shrewsbury has died. 20 Nov - 1590
