2 - At court of Beaur' [Belper] held there, 18 March 14 Henry VI, surrender by Isabel Mylner of Belper of one acre with a messuage within at will, recently in the tenure of William Balle, to the use of John Sowter, Alice his wife and the heirs and assigns of John. Entry fine 6d. At foot: 'in the time of Humfrey, Earl of Stafford' - [1436]
3 - At the view of frankpledge of Beaurepaire [Belper] held at Duffield, 12 November 18 Henry VI John Sowter of Belper and his wife Alice came and took one pasture called Schothulruyddynge containing 6 acres, and parcel of pasture called Wateruyddynge containing 4 acres 1 rood recently in the tenure of Thomas Rappoke, to hold for their lives, after their deaths reverting to sons Robert and John to each of them as long as he shall live, their heirs and assigns, to hold in severalty. Rent 6s 10d. Entry fine 12d. At foot: 'in the time of Humfrey Earl of Stafford Steward of the King's honour of Tutbury. Also "Yonge".' - [1439]
4 - At court of Beurepere [Belper] held at Allerwaslegh [Alderwasley] 25 July 26 Henry VI there was a precept to the bailiff by the steward to seize one messuage in Belper recently in the tenure of Thomas Rappok for default of repair and of payment of rent, and 2 closes in the tenure of John Sowter and Alice his wife called Shothulruddynge containing 6 acres and Wateruyddynge containing 4 acres 1 rood, recently appurtenances of the same messuage; first proclamation was made that if anyone wished he might take the messuage and closes for the ancient rent, and no-one chose to do this; at court held at Hasilwode [Hazelwood] 17 October 27 Henry VI a second proclamation was made; at court held at Cowhouse 7 November a third proclamation was made; at court held at Beurepere [Belper] 28 November a fourth proclamation was made; at court held at Haselwod [Hazelwood] 19 December, upon a fifth proclamation, John Sowter of Beureper and Alice his wife came and took the closes called Shothulruddynge and Watteruddyng, to hold to them for their lives and then to remain to Robert and John their sons to hold in severalty to them, their heirs and assigns. Rent 6s 10d, entry fine 2s. And ? sought licence to hold in severalty to the aforesaid John Sowter and Thomas his son, half a pasture called Maysterfeld of assart containing 16 acres, to hold to them, their heirs and assigns, at new rent of 6d. - [1448]
5 - At the court of Duffeld held at Beurepere [Belper], 9 January 27 Henry VI, surrender by Thomas Strete of Belper, of close called Barburclose at will, lying in Sothewode, recently in the tenure of John Welde, to the use of John Sowter of Belper, Alice his wife and Robert their son, and they came and took the close to hold to them, their heirs and assigns. Entry fine -. At foot:' in the time of Humfrey Duke of Bukham [Buckingham] Steward there.' - [1449]
6 - At court of Belper held at Ashleyhay, Thursday in feast of St Peter the Apostle [29 June] 12 Henry VII, surrender by William Roos of cottage in Belper recently in the tenure of John Bonsall, to the use of Roger Greygory; it remained in the hands of the lord, whence Roger sought 3 proclamations, the first was made and no-one came, at the court held at Dalley [?Darley] on Thursday before St James the Apostle [20 July], a second proclamation was made and no-one came; at court held at Belper upon a third proclamation, 3 August, Roger Greygory was admitted to the cottage, to hold to him, his heirs and assigns. Entry fine 8d. - [1497]
7 - At the court of Beaurep' [Belper] held there Thursday 4 May 23 Henry VII, surrender by John Elestones, of croft in Belper lying between the messuage called le Presthowse and the messuage of Thomas Elestones, to the use of Roger Gregory and his heirs, whence the first proclamation was made without claim ("sine reclam"); at court held at Windley on 25 May a second proclamation was made without claim, and at court held at Turnditch Thursday in the week of Pentecost [15 June], upon a third proclamation without claim, Roger was admitted to the croft. Entry fine 4d. - [1508]
8 - At court of Beaurep' [Belper] held at Duffeld Thursday 18 October 7 Henry VIII, Roger Gregory surrendered cottage and croft adjoining the said messuage in Belper to the use of Richard Souter and Alice Gregorye and the legitimate heirs of their bodies and one proclamation was made without claim (`sine reclam'): at court held at Ashleyhay, Thursday 8 November a second proclamation was made without claim, and at court held at Duffield, Thursday 29 November upon a third proclamation without claim Richard Souter and Alice Gregory were admitted to the cottage and croft to hold to them and the legitimate heirs of their bodies. Entry fine 16d. - [1515]
9 - At court of Beaurep [Belper] held at Duffeld Thursday 18 October 7 Henry VIII, surrender by Thomas Sowter of messuage with one acre of land at will, close called Shotilriddyng and Waterryddyng, 11 acres land, Barbo' close and one rood of land in Belper to the use of Richard Souter and Alice Gregory and the legitimate heirs of their bodies; one proclamation was made without claim (`sine reclam'); at court held at Ashleyhay Thursday 8 November, a second proclamation was made without claim, and at court held at Duffield Thursday 29 November upon a third proclamation without claim, Richard and Alice were admitted to the messuage and lands to hold to them and the legitimate heirs of their bodies.
