1 - Notice by Richard St George Norroy King of Arms reciting commission to summon gentlemen of his province to register their descents, arms and cognizances, and to distinguish and make infamous those taking name of esquire or gentleman without just authority, and reciting further that Stephen Longsden of Longsden appears at visitation and disclaimed title of gentleman under his hand as not knowing how he might justify it, whereon Norrey proceeded against him; since when Stephen made further enquiry and, finding that his ancestors have been long reputed gentlemen and borne arms, which according to gentlemen of good sort he is able to prove by evidences and other good record, desires affirmation of his right, Now Norroy makes known that Stephen Longsden may lawfully use and bear such arms and crests as his ancestors have done before him, and bear name, title, and dignity of a gentleman - 20 Nov [1611]

6 - Letter from George Cavendish at London to William Longsdon on the forthcoming election, and his own anxious desire, shared by the Duke of Devonshire, to keep quite clear of it and not interfere in slightest degree with the choice of the electors of N. Derbyshire, Lord George almost regrets that Mr Evans introduced his [Lord George's] name into his closing address because though their conversation had been innocent enough it was in the address susceptible of misinterpretation. Further account of Mr Evans telling Lord George in May or June 1852 of his wish to retire from Parliament, and Mr Gisborne's opinion that retirement was not opportune when the Derbyites [Conservatives] were stirring heaven and earth to get a majority, and retirement would involve County in all the horrors of a contest. Evans had agreed to stand at the General Election on condition that he should be free to retire before the next Dissolution. Nothing had been said about his son standing. As only Lord George's name mentioned in address, Lord George might be suspected of influencing him for personal reasons, instead of merely concurring in Gisborne's advice "to see the County spared the horrors and heart burnings of a contested election." Lord George knows nothing but good of Mr Thomas Evans. Lord George is glad to hear that William is safely back in this country, and hopes that his health has not been affected. He regrets that the [Bakewell] Board of Guardians declined to elect Mr Taylor [John Taylor, as Clerk]. The appointment which has taken place should not have done so. Lord George said so at the Board meeting when the Board cut down the salary without further enquiry. Hopes to be at Ashford next week. 15 July [1853]. - [1853]

10-11 - Draft letter to Sir Massey Lopes [Right Honourable Sir Massey Lopes, 3rd Baronet, Member of Parliament for Westbury, later Civil Lord of the Admiralty 1874-80] on Local Taxation, to which parliamentary attention was called on 27 February and 24 April, with a copy letter of 26 April 1871 arguing that personal property should contribute to Local Tax, that lack of precedent is no plea because Church rates were recently abolished and Tithes which were never a parliamentary tax were commuted for a general tax on all land instead of being chiefly limited to a claim on corn and hay, so diminishing taxes on land appropriated to corn and hay by above half, and old Pasture Land which was never subject to tithe suffered in proportion; adding that the policy of reduction of indirect taxation to its present point is unwise and in its effect unjust - 1871
