1 - Letter from Mr W M Evans, 386 Oxford Street, London, to his mother, Mrs Evans, The Temple, Matlock. He has received the two hampers, “the second containing a Hare and a couple of Fowls”. He has suffered an attack of scarlet fever.
2 - Copy will of Eneas Evans of Derby, stone-cutter. To his wife Ann Evans he bequeaths all his household goods and furniture, stock in trade, money and securities for money and other personal estates and effects out of which she is to pay the sum of £30 a piece to her three sons, Thomas Eneas and Francis Evans when they attain the age of twenty three. If his wife remarries he directs that his said three sons shall receive the sum of £10 a piece in addition to the £30. Dated 22 July - 1778
3 - Probate certificate relating to the will of Eneas Evans late of Derby, stone cutter, His widow Ann Evans is named as his sole executrix. Dated 13 October. - 1778
4 - Attested copy articles of agreement between Ann Evans of Derby, widow, and Francis Evans, son of the said Ann Evans, of the one part, and Francis Beresford of Ashbourne, gent, one of the Attornies of His Majesty’s Court of King’s Bench at Westminster, of the other part, by which the said Francis Evans binds himself to the said Francis Beresford to serve him as his clerk in his said profession of Attorney at Law for the term of 5 years. Dated 10 February.
5 - Marriage licence of Mr Aneas Evans and Miss Esther Shore both of Buxton in the parish of Bakewell. The marriage is to be solemnized in Bakewell parish church. Dated 12 November - 1792
6 - Copy will and probate certificate (dated 30 October 1794) of Ann Evans, late of Derby but now of Lane End in co. Stafford, widow. To her son Francis Evans she bequeaths £110 and the residue of her personal estate and effects. She appoints the said Francis Evans as her executor. Dated 2 November - 1793
7 - Letter form Francis Evans of Lane End [Staffordshire] to his brother, Thomas Evans of Brookside, Derby, informing him of the death of their mother on the previous Friday 21 February 1794, “after having suffered a severe and lingering illness”. She is to be buried at Endon [Staffordshire]. He has written “to the Printer at Derby to give it a place in his next paper”. Dated 24 February - 1794
8 - Copy will (and probate certificate, dated 14 October 1813) of Eneas Evans of the parish of Matlock, innkeeper. To his brother Francis Evans of Lane End in co. Stafford, gent. And Stephen Shore of the City of London he bequeaths all his freehold and copyhold messuages, lands tenements, hereditaments and real estate, and also all his household goods and furniture plate, linen, china beds, bedding, ready money and securities for money and all other personal estate and effects, upon trust to pay the yearly interest and the yearly rents of his real estate to his wife Hester Evans. If his wife remarries, Francis Evans and Stephen Shore are to pay her the yearly sum of £50 out of his real and personal estate, and to pay the remainder towards the maintenance and bringing up of his children Walter Mather Evans and Frances Shore Evans. After the death of his wife all his real and personal estate is to be divided equally between his son Walter Mather Evans and his daughter Frances Shore Evans. He appoints his wife and the said Francis Evans and Stephen Shore as his executrix and executors and the guardians of his children. Dated 17 July. - 1811
9 - Certificate issued by the Stamp Office, Somerset Place, London, authorizing Walter Mather Evans of 34 South Molton Street, gent, to practise as an attorney until 15 November 1829. Dated 22 January - 1829
10 - Certificate admitting Walter Mather Evans of South Molton Street, Grosvenor Square in co. Middlesex gent, an Attorney of His Majesty’s Court of King’s Bench, as a solicitor in the High Court of Chancery. Dated 13 February - 1829
11 - Court of King’s Bench: Miscellaneous plea of trespass and ejectment of farm. Dated Easter Term - 1829
12 - Court of King’s Bench: Staffordshire. “John Hulme and Thomas Shaw, executors of Francis Evans, deceased put in their place Walter Mather Evans, their attorney, against Richard Edensor Heathcote, Esquire, Administrator of Sir John Edensor Heathcote, Knight, deceased of a plea of trespass on the case ………………. Staffordshire to wit Richard Edensor Heathcote Administrator as aforesaid puts in his place Robert Barton his Attorney at the suit of the said John Hulme and Thomas Shaw, executors as aforesaid ……. ”Dated Hilary Term - 1831
13 - Apprenticeship indenture of John Evans, son of William Evans of Buxton, spar manufacturer, to George Stevenson of the parish of All Saints in the Borough of Derby, mercer and draper for the term of 5 years, from 23 September, in consideration of the sum of £29 to be paid by the said William Evans in three instalments. Dated 9 September. - 1833
15 - “Family Remembrance” – a note of the dates of birth of the children of Thomas and Sarah Evans, who were married on 7 October 1790, and other family details
16 - Probate copy will (proved on 29 January 1890) of John Evans of The Temple, Matlock Bath, gent. He appoints his son William Warren Evans of Matlock Bath and his friend, Walter Barlow of Brinnington, Stockport, manufacturer, as his executors. He devises to them all his real estate upon trust to permit his wife Sarah Evans to occupy his house and land rent free. He bequeaths all his consumable household stores and provisions to his wife. The residue of his personal estate he bequeaths to the said William Warren Evans and Walter Barlow upon trust to permit his wife to select such articles of household furniture and effects as she may wish, and after her decease or marriage both the capital and the income of the trust fund to be on trust for his children, William Warren Evans, Betsy Evans and Sarah Evans in equal shares. Dated 18 October - 1886
17 - Assignment by William Burbidge of Derby., gent., Robert Creswell of Little Chester, framework knitter, and Elizabeth his wife to Roger Shore of Snitterton yeoman, and Samuel Haslam of Ashover, yeoman in consideration of the sum of £55 paid to William Burbidge by the said Roger Shore and Samuel Haslam and in consideration of the sum of £55 paid to Robert Creswell and Elizabeth his wife by the said Roger Shore and Samuel Haslam, of two separate annuities of £5 yearly devised to William Burbidge and Elizabeth, the wife of Robert Creswell by the will of Obadiah Hodgkinson, late of Little Chester, gent, deceased. Dated 21 January - 1737
18 - Final concord between Roger Shore, plaintiff, and George Bradley and Hannah his wife and David Watts and Mary his wife deforciants of one messuage, 6 acres of land, 2 acres of meadow, and 6 acres of pasture with the appurtenances in Matlock and of a twenty fourth part of the manor of Matlock with the appurtenances: consideration £100. Dated Easter Term - 1739
19 - Probate copy will (proved on 29 April 1748) of Roger Shore of Snitterton, yeoman. To his daughter Truth Shore he bequeaths one large oak chest, one chest of drawers, a bed with red hangings and all the furniture thereto belonging. To his son Robert Shore he leaves all his groves, lead mines and mineral possessions and parts and shares thereof and also all his messuages, houses, lands, tenements and hereditaments and all other real and personal estate, subject to the payment of £200 to his daughter Truth Shore. He appoints his son Robert Shore as his executor. - 1747
20 - Memorandum of an agreement made between the Reverend Dr William Powell and John Ball, esq. William Powell agrees to lease to John Ball and Company for the term of 21 years the two tenements of Bron-y-berllan and Caymadog in the county of Cardigan, and for him the said John Ball, his executors or assigns to search and dig, cleanse and carry away all lead ore or copper ore that shall be discovered in or upon the said premises and to execute a common mine lease upon the above terms with proper and usual covenants according to this agreement and the custom of Cardiganshire. The said John Ball is to pay to the said William Powell the sum of one pound a ton of all ore made merchantable on the said premises, and also to give him or his agent four days’ notice before any ore shall be carried off the said premises, and also to forfeit this agreement or a subsequent lease, if the working on the said premises shall be neglected at any one period of time for the space of three months. The said John Ball also covenants for himself and his Company to drive a sufficient level to the old mines from or near the river under them so as to make a through trail thereof upon Bron-y-Berllan. Dated 24 July. - 1747
21 - Assignment of a lease for 21 years by Thomas Johnes of Croft Castle in co. Hereford, esq., to Marmaduke Gwynne of Brecon in co. Brecon., esq. Phillip Pugh of Tyglyn in co. Cardigan, esq., and Robert Shore of Snitterton in co. Derby, gent of all the mines and groves of lead ore and copper ore, lapis Calrininaries, Black Jack or mock ore with all the rakes, pipes, flotts and veins and all other ores and minerals of all those several farms, messuages, or tenements called Llwyn y Gwiddil and Llwynn Llwyd situated in the parish of Gwnnws in co. Cardigan, now or late in the tenure of Morgan Thomas and John Morgan and also full power to work all mines hitherto opened, yielding and paying to the said Thomas Johnes the sum of £1 5s a ton for each ton of lead and copper ores which shall be raised. Dated 20 September. - 1772
22 - Grant by Nicholas Barker, Henry Barker and William Barker of Winster, the proprietors of a lead mine within the liberty of Winster called Orchard Mine, to Robert Shore of Snitterton, gent, in consideration of the sum of 5 shillings, of all minerals under any houses, outhouses, edifices or buildings of the said Nicholas, Henry and William Barker situated in Winster. Dated 7 April - 1775
23-24 - Copy verdict of the Grand Jury or Twenty Four for the Liberty of Stoney Middleton and Eyam giving one full fourth part of ore to the sough owners within the Liberty. Affixed is a copy Arrest, dated 12 September 1734 of one fourth part of the lead ore at Ladywash Mine in Eyam for composition to Stoke Sough. The plaintiffs are named as the partners, owner and proprietors of Stoke Sough, viz., William Simson, esq., John Simson clerk, Heyrick Atharope esq., Francis Sitwell, esq., Charles Turner esq., and Robert Sherwood, esq. The defendants are named as Mr Thomas Gell, Mr Robert Clay and Mr Robert Middleton and other parties at Ladywash Mine. A fourth part of the ore is regarded as the composition or duty due to the plaintiffs for unwatering Ladywash Mine. Dated 12 September - 1785
25 - Lease for three years from 18 January 1777 by George White of Winster, gent to Robert Shore of Snitterton gent., in consideration of a yearly rent of £200, of one moiety or half part of a paper mill near Matlock Bath in the parish of Matlock and all engines, wheels, presses, vats, drying houses, warehouses and all other materials, utensils and appurtenances, and also the sole use and benefit of all apprentices bound to the said George White and Robert Shore and all that close or parcel of land on which the said mill stands, and all that other close or parcel of ground lying near the said mill and jointly belonging to the said George White and Robert Shore and known as Richardsons Pingle. Dated 18 April. - 1777
