HistoryThe Roman Catholic chapel at Hathersage was opened in 1692, but destroyed by a mob soon afterwards. Rebuilding work began in 1798, with the chapel returning to public use in 1806 and becoming known as the Church of St Michael the Archangel in the mid-nineteenth century. A Sunday school and library were founded in 1825, the predecessor of St Michael's Catholic School which closed in 1984. In 1992, the church held a celebration of the three hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the original chapel, and it is from the associated exhibition that the core of this archival collection derives.
