HistoryConstruction work for a new general hospital began in 1926, and the new Derby City Hospital officially opened on 16 November 1929 (although it was not until 1977 that Derby received City Status). The hospital was commissioned by the Derby Board of Guardians, and responsibility for management and governance was transferred to the Derby Borough Council Public Assistance Committee Hospital sub-committee in April 1930 (under the Local Government Act 1929, which abolished all Boards of Guardians). By 1931, a new Health (Hospital) Sub-Committee was constituted on 1 April 1931. On the establishment of the National Health Service (NHS) on 6 July 1948, the hospital came under the control of the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board: Derby Area No. 1 Hospital Management Committee.
