Biography | Eric Graham Varley was born in Poolsbrook. His father was a coalminer, Frank Varley. His mother was Eva Varley, née Goring. He became a branch secretary in the National Union of Mineworkers in 1955. He was adopted as the Chesterfield constituency Labour Party candidate in 1963 and elected to parliament the following year. He became Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister Harold Wilson in November 1968 and became a junior minister at the Ministry of Technology from 1969. Varley left parliament in 1984, to become chairman of Coalite Plc. He was made a life peer in 1990. |
