Biography
Benjamin Bakewell was born in Derby in 1767, the son of Joseph Bakewell and Sarah Woodhouse. He was an importer of French wares until trade was disrupted by the French Revolutionary wars in 1792. In 1793 he travelled to New York and set up an import business there, which also failed due to French and English trade disruption and American embargoes. In 1808, he purchased a flint glasshouse in Pittsburgh, which under his management became a highly successful glass company, known under the names The Pittsburgh Glass Manufactory, Bakewell & Page and Bakewell, Pears & Co. He married Ann White in 1791 at Edgbaston, Warwickshire, with whom he had several children: Thomas, Nancy, John and Euphemia. He died in Pittsburgh in 1844.
