Educated at Westminster and Rugby schools and Trinity College, Cambridge, he became an Anglican clergyman, being ordained as a deacon in 1840 and as a priest in 1841, becoming Curate of Hurstmonceaux, Sussex until 1845. He was Assistant Master at Harrow, 1845-1855, then went on to be Rector of Brington, Northamptonshire, 1855-1868. and Rector of North Creake, Norfolk, 1868-1894. He married Sarah Dorothea Vaughan, daughter of Rev. E.T. Vaughan, Headmaster of Harrow School, at St. Martin's parish church, Leicester, 6 Dec 1849; they had at least nine children.
