BiographyThe son of Scottish parents, he was educated in Aberdeen, Scotland; having served as a clerk with the Royal Engineers in Antigua, he returned home in 1829, and then sailed from Edinburgh to Tasmania. He arrived in Hobart in Feb 1839, being appointed as overseer of the penitentiary under his brother William; he took up several positions in public service before becoming Sir John Franklin's private secretary in 1840; he resigned next year to manage the estates of William Lawrence, and then in 1843 those of Lady Jane Franklin, becoming a trustee of the Ancanthe botannical reserve and Betsy Island. He continued in public service until his retirement in 1876,
