Biography
In February 1850 he was chosen to be in charge of H.M.S. Assistance, as second in command to Captain Horatio Austin on H.M.S. Resolute, in the search expedition for Sir John Franklin, his ships and crews; they were the first to discover any evidence about Franklin's expedition, finding out that they had wintered on Beechey Island, 1845-1846, incluidng the graves of three of his crew; the expedition returned to England in October 1851. He was knighted in 1877, the same year he was promoted to admiral on the retired list.
