HistoryAfter the end of fighting in the American and Napoleonic wars, he turned his attention to science and exploration. In 1818 he served as astronomer on John Ross's expedition in search of the north-west passage. He sailed on William Edward Parry's expedition to overwinter in 1819-1820, making magnetic observations with Parry and James Clarke Ross. He promoted and undertook extensive research on geomagnetism for over 30 years and received several awards for his work in this field. He was President of the Royal Society from 1861-1871.
