He graduated in medicine from Edinburgh in 1797; after initially practising in London, he moved to York in 1798; he was an early advocate for the use of inoculation against smallpox in 1800; he was appointed in 1801 as Physician to The Retreat, an institution run by the Society of Friends (Quakers) for the reception of insane persons; suffering from ill health, he left England to go to Italy for the cure but died en route at sea on 16 Nov 1802
