TitleLand tax
Date1778-1832
DescriptionUsually recording the owners of land in each parish, and in most cases (particularly after 1772) the occupier's names are also included - sometimes only brief details of the occupiers are recorded, i.e. 'William Smith and others'. It is not usual for the name of property to be recorded. The rental column can often be blank but in theory it recorded the value of the property. However, properties were rarely revalued.

Note: the term 'late' next to a persons name may actually mean they have moved rather than that they are deceased. Ditto marks are also used horizontally as well as vertically.

Administrative HistoryLand tax was levied from 1692 until 1961, and from 1780 until the introduction of electoral registration in 1832, the returns were used by the Clerk of the Peace as a means of establishing who had the right to vote.

From 1772-1909, 4 shillings per pound was paid. This fixed percentage allows comparisons to be made year on year. A note of caution when using the land tax: from 1798 landowners could redeem their land tax liability by paying a lump sum equivalent to 15 years of the tax, thus they may not appear again on the returns (though often they were recorded for voting purposes).
Related MaterialSurvival of land tax records after 1832 is patchy as copies were no longer required for voting purposes. Pre-1780 records may be found amongst other collections, particularly parish archives.
