TitleLicensed Victuallers (alehouse and innkeepers)
Date1753-1827
DescriptionThe Registers of licensed victuallers record recognisances entered into by persons granted licences for keeping alehouses, inns and victualling houses by justices at their meetings for this purpose in the respective hundreds of the County for which they acted and which have been returned to the Clerk of the Peace.

The lists give the name of the victualler and place with, until 1778, names of sureties and amount of surety. Though they list the innkeepers and alehouse keepers throughout the county for a substantial period, they do not give the name of the inn itself.

Administrative HistoryThe Act of 5-6 Ed VI c 25 (1552) required licensed victuallers to enter into a recognisance (bond) of good behaviour which was to remain on record at Quarter Sessions. The Act of 26 Geo II c 31 (1753) also required the Clerk of the Peace to keep a register of bonds. An Act of 9 Geo IV c 61 (1828) brought this system to an end.
ArrangementThe lists are by hundred with Chesterfield entered separately from Scarsdale hundred.
