Q/AF/9
Title
FINANCE: Corn Price Returns and Certificates
Date
1770-1791
Description
By the Act of 10 Geo III c39 (1769) the prices at which corn was sold were to be returned [to the government], local justices appointing those who were to make the returns. They were to be paid from the county rates, on the justices' receipt of certificates that the returns had been made together with duplicates of the returns. (Old numbers of all documents under this heading were Box XV 6 and Box K)
Q/AF/9/5-172 (1770-1791) are Quarterly certificates of the return of corn prices with (on the same paper) duplicates of prices and certificates that the persons who had made the returns were entitled to be paid for their trouble. The prices relate to wheat, rye, barley, oats and beans. The documents were addressed to 'Treasury' or 'The Treasurer of the County'.
By the Act 31 Geo III c 30 (1791) for regulating corn imports and exports, corn dealers were liable to a fine if they bought corn for sale unless they had filed with the clerk of the peace a declaration that their returns of prices would be true. This regulation was continued by the Act 1-2 Geo IV c 87 (1821)
Q/AF/9/173-183 (1791-1793) are quarterly certificates that returns of corn prices have been made (it is uncertain whether these were, as were Q/AF/9/5-172, sent to the Treasurer of the county as authorisation for payment of the expenses of those making the returns)
