One of the Melbourne maps is described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:
Part of the Lands in the Manor and Parish of Melburn in the County of Derby.1735.Surveyor:William Gardiner. Scale:of Perches, 320 being one statute Mile [1:3200]. Size: 53 x 31 cm., irregular. Materials: coloured ink on vellum. Centred on: SK390243 Notes: Sheet 7, in 'A Survey of the several Estates in Land belonging to the Right Honourable Lord Theophilus Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon, Baron Hastings, etc. and Peverel, In the several Manors or Parishes of Packington, Measham, Oak-Thorpe, Graysley, Over-Seal, Ashby de la Zouch, Smisby, Tedbury, Stanton juxta Pontem, Melburn, Castle-Donington, Hathern, Hoton, Prestwould, Loughborough and Barrow, in the several Counties of Leicester, Derby and Stafford. By William Gardiner, Land Surveyor. 1735', a bound volume of estate maps: coloured title page, coat- of-arms: 8 point compass rose, top of sheet west: shows area south of Melbourne, 147 acres, with named closes with areas, hedges, letter references and signs; buildings in block plan, coloured red; lake 'Furnace pool', 'Furnace Yard' (fenced), streams, roads: careful, sophisticated draftsmanship. Location: Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, DG30/MA/9/4.
