Administrative HistoryDerbyshire Education Committee School Museum Service was established in September 1936 following a Carnegie Trust grant and inspired by a model observed in the United States by the County Librarian Edgar Osborne.

The service aimed to bring educational benefits by providing a mobile museum collection. After its initial successes, the service expanded to include the Pastures Hospital and Sudbury Prison in addition to all the county's schools and colleges.

On 1 April 1947, the collection moved from St Mary's Gate to Park Grange, Duffield Road, Derby. From the 1947-1948 annual report onwards, the word "school" was dropped and the organisation was simply known as the Derbyshire Education Committee Museum Service. It later became part of the Derbyshire Museum Service (see DCC/CL/9/1). As the Derbyshire Museum Service was closing down during 1991-1992, the School Museum Service was made temporarily inactive, before being absorbed into the School Library Service.
