TitleParish Survey 1962: Correspondence concerning the surveying of civil and ecclesiastical parish records by Derbyshire's first County Archivist, with related papers including copy deposit receipts
Date1962-1968
DescriptionCorrespondence includes:
Letter dated Jul 1962 from the Bishop of Derby to parish incumbents, introducing Joan Sinar as County Archivist and asking them to give her assistance as she inspects and lists parish records.
Letters from and to civil parishes including Beighton, Brimington, Pinxton, South Wingfield, Woodville and incumbents of ecclesiastical parishes including Blackwell, Linton, Swanwick and Taddington.
Letter from the County Archivist to the Bishop of Derby dated 4 Jun 1964 re microfilming of parish registers.
Reply dated 19 Jun 1964, urging caution over the prospect of members of the Mormon church being allowed to do this. Discusses the distinction between civil and ecclesiastical parishes being somewhat blurred prior to 1894.
Letter of approach, following a Derbyshire Times article dated 29 May 1964 relating to a private individual's collection of books, pictures and records.
Letter from the County Archivist to the Bishop of Derby dated 11 Jan 1968. Describes a misunderstanding over a previous survey of records in Morley parish. Assures the bishop that "if you should decide to permit the deposit of parish records in this office, no such records would be loaned from it" as deposited records may not leave the office without the depositor's permission. Also states a general rule "that documents less than 100 years old are not shown to searchers without the written consent of the owner or prior custodian unless the documents fall into the very limited classes to which the public have statutory rights of access".
Copy letter dated 20 Feb 1968 from Joan Sinar, County Archivist, to Edgar Osborne [County Librarian]. Refers to a survey of parish records being carried out at the behest of the county council, with the support of the diocese. The letter puts the case for the Bishop of Derby to exercise his powers under the Parochial Registers and Records Measure of 1929 by recognising Derbyshire Record Office as diocesan archive repository.
Related papers include:
Copy of Derby Diocesan News Dec 1954, with notice highlighted explaining that it is not acceptable for incumbents and churchwardens to hand over ecclesiastical records to a civil authority without a faculty permitting this.
