Administrative History
The Severn Award was set up in 1980 by the family of the late Mr and Mrs John Severn of Alfreton. The sum of money used to set up the competition was intended to provide prizes for the competition over a period of 21 years, after which Derbyshire County Council would be permitted to use the remaining funds for the needs of Alfreton Library. Although the competition was run through Alfreton Library, the Social Services department was involved because the Severn Award invited contributions from people with disabilities, older people and children.
