Administrative HistoryHi Sarah,

We've had an email (in DROArchives under the name James Easter). Lois Willoughby-Easter is a retired Metropolitan woman Police officer and am very interested in women police history.

She is researching when women were employed as police officers, who the first women officers were and if there were any who went far beyond the call of duty, with a view to publishing. Specifically, she is asking if there are any historic photos of early women police pioneers.

I've found a few things on CALM, mostly post-WW2, but also a personnel register beginning in 1857.

Do you know of anything more in the collection, and also are the closure periods for the CALM entries up to date?

Thanks

PaulThe office of Clerk of the Peace pre-dates the existence of county councils by some centuries. Following the Local Government Act 1888, the Clerk of the Peace took on a chief executive role. In Derbyshire County Council, this meant the same officer held the roles of Clerk of the Peace and Clerk to the County Council. The Clerk of the Peace role was abolished by the Courts Act 1971.
