Description | Before 1941, borough and district councils had been responsible for fire services, but in that year all the local services were absorbed into a National Fire Service. In 1947, under the Fire Services Act, fire fighting functions were transferred to county and county borough councils. Much of the brigade's responsibility under subsequent legislation was concerned with fire prevention, entailing inspection of premises for fire escapes, provision of first aid, fire fighting equipment and fire alarms in addition to the fire fighting role. |
