TitleTravel diary of Edith Brodrick [later Edith Lyttelton Gell] for a family holiday in the Italian lakes and Switzerland
Date1880
DescriptionDated Tuesday 4 May to Saturday 26 June. Accompanied by her father, her mother, her sisters Helen, "Gussey" [Augusta Louisa], "Alba" [Albina Lucy], and people called Broughton and Foster. They sett off from home via London, Folkestone Harbour, Boulogne Harbour, travelling to Paris for a few days (places visited included Versailles, the Opera to see Faust, the churches of Notre Dane, the Madelaine). On 12 May they travelled on south to the Italian Lakes, via Lac de Bourget, Aix-les-Bains, Turin, Milan, and staying on Lake Maggiore. They moved on to Villeneuve, Lac Leman (1 June), and visited Lausanne, Berne, Geneva, Lucerne and Interlachen. They made their journey home, going via Basle, Paris and Boulogne, reaching home one 26 June .
The year was not recorded, but a date could be established by a meeting with an acquaintance who recognised Edith 11 years later from their last encounter when she was aged 9 [she was born in 1860], and the dates of days and months tally with the year 1880.
