Title
Journal by Captain Franklin during his land journey to the shores of the Arctic Sea
Date
14 Aug 1821-7 Jan 1822
Description
Information on first page indicates that the pages covering 15 Sep 1821 to 7 Jan 1821 were original, and that the period from 14 Aug to 14 Sep 1821 was written as a narrative.
This log book records the last months of Franklin's first independent expedition to the Arctic. He intended to travel from Hudson's Bay to the mouth of the Coppermine River in Coronation Gulf. It took two years before the expedition came within sight of the sea and only a brief survey of the coast could be undertaken before the expedition had to return because of lack of supplies. Unfortunately, the group then found themselves stranded in the `Barren Lands' west of Hudson's Bay and were near death when they were rescued by an Indian Chief, Akaitcho. During the months covered by this logbook, several members of the 24-strong expedition died of starvation and two were killed by colleagues
Handwriting small and difficult to read; book cover labelled "Azimuths", writing inside written over pre-printed pages with no actual figures recorded.
Several sections and pages loose or cut out.
