Title	Letter from John Franklin to Eleanor Anne Porden, on his having been engaged in business but wanting to be with her tomorrow

Description	Has been engaged with brother all day on a matter of business that required immediate attention. Her note was very satisfactory to him. He will try to be with her tomorrow. Has to go again with his brother to attend to other business. They look forward to being introduced to Eleanor again. Written 6 o'clock Thursday [i.e. 17th], postmarked morning 18 Jan 1823.

Transcript or Index	To Miss Porden 6 Upper Portland Place My dear Eleanor I got your note just as I was going out this morning to meet my Brother, with whom I have been engaged all the day, arranging some business for him at the India House which required immediate attention. These occupations have kept me from the pleasure of seeing you, and of assuring you how perfectly satisfactory you note was to me. I shall make a point of being with you tomorrow, but I fear it will be the afternoon before I do, as I shall have to go again with my Brother and his wife on some other business. On recollection I think it probable I may get to you about Eleven, and go to them afterwards. They both anticipate much pleasure in being introduced to you. I rather led my sister <in Marlboro’ Street> to expect a visit from you yesterday – did I not understand that to be your intention? The arrival of my Brother prevented me from accompanying Mr Kay to Greenwich, and I have not seen him and consequently had not learnt that you had fixed the day. We will talk on this point tomorrow. I am now going to dinner, and am in fact keeping a gentleman waiting whom I am to accompany Ever yours most truly John Franklin Six O’clock Thursday
