Title	Letter from Mary Anne Kendall to her cousin Eleanor Isabella Franklin, on Mary Ann's money worries and hopes and prayers for Franklin's expedition

Description	Has been meaning to write for a long time; anxieties about money; Mama is unable to send any money; had been hoping that uncle would lend her some to tide her over; has been more difficult over the Christmas quarter; recovering from a long illness; trusts that God will provide for widows and fatherless children; apologies for telling Eleanor about her money worries; Eleanor’s proposed visit; may not be time because Eleanor seeing the Richardsons as well; will be in London again in March because Franklin going to Christ’s Hospital School; so much to say to Eleanor; wants her to combine visit to Winchester; fears that she will soon lose her home because she has no income; needs to earn own income; asks that Eleanor does not tell “any of the girls” in Gower Street; too soon for Mama to know what the outcome [of the expedition] may be; bishop’s service on 2nd January, faith and hope for the coming year; bishop leaving his native land; Sir J.R. also leaving; trust in God; service to God; prayers for those close to her heart; strong sense of communion with both people present and people absent, “the Polar voyagers were amongst us”; home visit by bishop afterwards, blessed the children; Port of London “notoriously the worst in the world for these trading ships”, bishop is being kept waiting because cargo has to be taken off the ship in order to put ballast on board; bishop does not support having more occasions for national prayers, suggests that parish clergy could request prayers for “this particular Expedition” before the prayer for “all orders of men”; needs sanction of the Archbishop to be made general, then, if Archbishop approves, must go to the “Lucem in Council” to decide; Dr Hook’s new year’s eve and new year’s morning services were “refreshing”; likes the bishop; hopes God will support him in his work; love to Louisa, sorry to have missed her; kindest love to Mama. Postscript: Wednesday; asks Eleanor not to say anything about what she has told her; perhaps ought not to have said so much Paper black-edged
