TitleLetter from Catherine Cracroft to her cousin Eleanor Isabella Gell, including reference to prayers for the safe return of Eleanor's father before the end of the year
DateJan 1850
DescriptionShe apologises for not replying to her letter; she finds little time for writing letters. May the Heavenly Father hear Eleanor's prayers for the safe return of her father before the close of the year. This last expedition must be a prosperous one and she likes the missionary being on board, hopefully a blessing to those among whom he may labour. They have just heard Colonel and Mrs Reid are to be in town next week and remain a few weeks to put their two girls to school: Emma is anxious to meet them, and they her, having taken an affectionate interest in "her miserable affair"; she asks whether Eleanor could give Emma a bed for a few nights in the middle of February; Emma is going to Lady Simpkinson's in the spring and could not ask them on this occasion; it will be a pleasure for Emma to see Eleanor in her own home. She hopes Eleanor is well and not suffering much from the cold weather. She will send her doilers at the first opportunity. They may rejoice in Aunt Betsey's [Elizabeth Franklin] release from bodily sufferings: Mama has felt her death very much. Nothing has been settled about Catherine's visit to Devon: Augusta [Moore] is expecting her third baby, but not just yet. Sophy tells her Mr and Mrs Gell are in town; Catherinee asks whether they are on their way to Derby: Aunt Di and others will be glad to have their minister back; she hopes Mrs Gell's sight is improving. She aks whether Eleanor has read " Pilgrimage to Rome" and "Mornings with the Jesuits at Rome" by Reverend Hobart Seymour, which she thinks useful and interesting works.
PS: she supposes Eleanor and Sophy do not often meet, both being so fully occupied: she wishes they lived nearer to each other.
