TitleLetter from Isabella Cracroft to her niece Eleanor Isabella Gell, on happy memories of Eleanor's mother
Date11 Aug [1852]
DescriptionThanks for her letter, which remined her of happy days with Eleanor's mother in Isabella's own home, where many plans were made for the future enjoyment of each other's family, never destined to be carried out; it comforts her to think Eleanor's mother is in heaven; there are few beings in this world with her unselfish character. She has heard talk of sending Mr Small of High Church to New Zealand to enquire about the necessity of having a bishop for the Canterbury Settlement. She is glad that the children have benefitted from the country air and hopes that she and Mr Gell will do the same: little Franklin is backward in walking, but perhaps it is well, as delicate children are often allowed to exercise their limbs too early. PS. Emily Tennyson is to be confined in London, in a house lent them by a Mr [?]Menchell at 37 South Street, Grosvenor Square for the purpose of the expected arrival of the baby at the end of the month.
Dated only 11 Aug, but 1851 has been added in pencil; it is more likely to be 1852 based on the reference to the son's backwardness at walking (he would then be aged 15 months whereas in 1851 he would only be 3 months) and the expected birth of Emily Tennyson's child, which actually took place on 11 Aug 1852.
