Administrative HistoryAccording to the 'Report of Belgian Work 1914-1915' in the minute book, three Belgian families arrived in Buxton on 8 September 1914, the report's author having been in contact with Madame Vandervelde [?wife of Belgian socialist politician Emile Vandervelde] to offer to house two families herself. On 12 October, the Mayor of Buxton received a telegram asking if fifty wounded Belgian soldiers could be received in the town. On 13 October 1914 a meeting was organised by Miss Sutcliffe, Mrs Hubbersty and Mrs Peat Finney to arrange support and raise funds. A public meeting was subsequently held on 19 October 1914.
