TitlePublic/environmental art project file: Hilcote Artworks
Date2003-2007
DescriptionThis project envisaged a number of different works of public art for Hilcote:
- Mural panels, to be designed and printed by a mural artist working with young people, sited on the walls of the Memorial Chapel (i.e. the B Winning Methodist Chapel, New Street, Hilcote). The artist was Peter Massey and it was installed 2006.
- Seating inside the Chapel Yard, to be designed and painted by a wood carver working with young people, based on the history of the chapel.
- A village memorial and commemorative sculpture depicting the history of the village, sited opposite Blackwell Road, the creation of which would involve local residents of all ages.
- Trail furniture, to be designed by local residents working with a stone and wood carver.
- A Youth shelter, with weather-proofed seating, to be designed by young people in the village, working with an artist.
- "Hilcote Stories and Images" artist residency to celebrate the village with local residents of all ages. This was to include professional writing and photographic workshops, research into the history of the village, and the production of a book and website about the village.

The project involved Blackwell Parish Council, Hilcote Residents Association, with funding from the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest, Bolsover District Council, Derbyshire County Council and Arts Council England. The mosaic and shelter were exhibited at a celebration event at the chapel in 2006 (see D7913/1/3/7).
This file contains documents describing the project and its background in some detail. These include: planning timetable, detailed design drawings and plans for the artworks to be installed, minutes of planning meetings, contracts for services, photographs of work in progress on the mining memorial, minutes of the Village Memorial Steering Committee 2005-2007, financial papers.
