TitleJunction Arts youth work and schools file: Living Threads
Date2004
DescriptionThe Living Threads project linked Tibshelf Community School with a Sri Lankan school, St Cecilia's in Batticaloa, which had been affected by the disastrous 2004 Asian tsunami. The stated aims of the project were to raise money towards the rebuilding of the school, to provide longer-term assistance to the school and surrounding communities, and to "establish sustainable links with a school to ensure future development and encourage global citizenship". Additional money from the Paul Hamlyn fund enabled the project's extension to other schools in the same cluster. During the project, four banners were made collaboratively, with pupils in Batticaloa making segments which were sewn together in Derbyshire and eventually displayed at Tibshelf Community School. Lead teacher Sue Allen visited Sri Lanka as part of the project and shot some video footage. The resultant film was called "Hands across the Water: Building Links with St Cecilia's School, Sri Lanka". The file contains an activity report form (for funder, Arts Council England), artists' contracts for Karen Woods and Sara Giddens, and a report by Sue and Jerry Allen for Tibshelf Community School (colour, 5 pages) to explain how the funds were used.
