TitleJunction Arts youth work and schools file: Tibshelf Apollo
Date1999-2000
Description"Tibshelf Apollo" was the name of a Junction Arts project which took place in 1999, involving artist Jonathan Stephenson and Tibshelf Town End School. The pupils produced artwork on astronomical themes, creating end products intended for continuing use as teaching aids in the school. An exhibition of the pupils' paintings was also displayed at Bolsover Castle during October. The artist residency was devised by Junction Arts in partnership with English Heritage.

Following a research visit to Bolsover Castle by year 5 and year 6 pupils, the following works were created:
9 panels depicting the 9 planets
9 panels depicting the "school muses"
A star ceiling installation in the school hall
Individual "modellos" or ceiling designs on the theme of the planets, classical gods or "school muses"
The Tibshelf Apollo, a four-foot square oil painting by Stephenson with help from the pupils.

Correspondence with English Heritage and with the artist, minutes of meetings to discuss the project, design proposals, press release and other publicity materials, artist's contract, instructions for pupils working with the artist at Bolsover Castle, letter of thanks from Town End Junior School in Tibshelf and a number of colour printed artworks with a title page reading "The Tibshelf Apollo - copyright Jonathan Stephenson 1999".

Also included are papers deriving from an IN-SErvice Training day (INSET Day) organised by Junction Arts. It was aimed at teachers with an interest in the creative use of historical sites, drawing on examples from the Tibshelf Apollo project. The event was to have taken place on 19 Oct 1999, Bolsover Little Castle, but was cancelled due to lack of bookings.
