Description | In the mid-1990s, Junction Arts co-ordinated the manufacture of a number of textile banners relating to communities in the Bolsover district.
Participants were instructed in the following terms: "take a snippet of village life - a building, church, neighbour, pond, recreation ground, shop, road, friendship, people, show, carnival etc. Make a rough sketch of your thoughts and enlarge any fragments you particularly appreciate. Develop this into a collage using shreds and scraps of coloured paper. Then search for fabric and other stuff to concoct and devise an assemblage to portray the element of the village you would like to preserve in the memories of everyone".
Project notes dated 11 Feb 1995 give the locations of each of the banners and discuss arrangements for putting the banners on tour around different venues, and having the banners fireproofed. At that point the banners were hanging at: The Newton banner: Newton Community Centre The Bolsover banner: Bolsover Town Council Offices The Clowne banner: Clowne Junior School The Barlborough banner: still in preparation, work group based at Barborough Community Centre The Creswell banner: completed by Creswell Junior School, but still needing "tidy up" work The Shirebrook banner: still in preparation, in partnership with the Shirebrook Women's Group
