Administrative HistoryDerbyshire County Council has a supervisory role in the planning system, and issues recommendations to local planning authorities about work that should be carried out to protect and record archaeological evidence as developments are approved. The Development Control Archaeologist is an officer of Derbyshire County Council, working within the Conservation and Design section of the Place department. However, the position is funded by local planning authorities as a shared service. These records were created by archaeological consultants in response to a condition of planning permission to carry out site investigations or to record information about historic buildings.
Custodial HistoryThese records were transferred from Chesterfield Museum in July 2015 (see description for museum accession references). Some were originally allocated reference numbers D7538, D7863 and D7864 - these records were re-accessioned in October 2015.

Further additions have been received in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 from several sources including Buxton Museum and Art Gallery and the Conservation and Design section of Derbyshire County Council.

Related MaterialIn the event that site investigations yield significant finds, these may be accepted as acquisitions by a relevant museum. In such cases, the associated records are retained by museums as evidence of the provenance of their accessions. Such decisions are considered individually, but in this county the respositories most likely to receive such items are Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, Chesterfield Borough Museum and Derby Museum.
