High Sheriff for Derbyshire, 1826; Captain of Staffordshire Yeomanry, and Groom of the Bedchamber to the Duke of Sussex, circa late 1820s. His attempts to enter parliament also began in 1826, but he not successful until 1830 being elected M.P. for Durham/County Durham, and subsequently New Romney/Kent in 1831 and South Derbyshire in 1835, following an unsuccessful attempt in 1832. A further attempt at South Derbyshire in 1837 was also unsuccessful. He sold part of the Gresley estate to finance his political ambitions. He also published several political and literary works included pamphlets against Catholic emancipation and 'a tale about the evils of contemporary Rome' Sir Philip Gasteneys: a Minor (1829). He died childless after his only son died in infancy, the baronetcy then passed to Revd Sir William Nigel Gresley (see D77/4/14)
