Administrative HistoryTom Tomlinson was born in Rossendale, Lancashire, in 1908. He started work in a local factory at the age of 12 but continued his education at night school. At 18 he went to work with a Baptish minister in the East End of London and later became a minister himself. A keen walker, he took part in the mass trespass on Kinder Scout in 1932. He married Hild Crabtree in 1939, with whom he had two sons and one daughter. A conscientious objector in the Second World War, Tom worked on the land rather than going into the forces. After the war, he and Hilda ran a youth hostel at Edale until 1954, when he was appointed as the first warden for the Peak District National Park.

A keen local historian, Tom carried out his own research and wrote more than local history 20 booklets. After he retired from the Peak District National Park he worked part time as a teacher doing field studies in local nad natural history. He died at Hathersage in 1995.
