| Administrative History | The Pegge family were established in Osmaston by Ashbourne from the Middle Ages. Estates in Unstone p Dronfield came into the family through the marriage in 1702 of Gertrude Stephenson of Unstone to Christopher Pegge (1677-1724), a wool merchant in Derby and lead merchant in Chesterfield, of which town he was mayor three times. Christopher and Gertrude's son, Samuel (1704-1796), took holy orders and eventually became Rector of Whittington. A distinguished antiquary and author, he was succeeded by his son, also called Samuel (1733-1800), barrister and groom of the household to King George III and his grandson, Christopher, later Sir Christopher, Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford (1764-1822, knighted 1799). Christopher married Amey Couse of London in 1791 and they had one child, Mary, who became the wife of Revd Richard Moore Boultbee of Knowle, Warwickshire in 1816. Richard and Mary Boultbee had one son Joseph Moore Boultbee and three daughters, Charlotte Anna, Lucy Margaret and Jane Caroline Boultbee. The 'Brother Ward' mentioned in D741/1/1 is probably William Ward of Killamarsh who married Lydia Pegge, half-sister of Samuel Pegge senior by his father's second marriage. |
