| Administrative History | When the Diocese of Derby was carved out of the Diocese of Southwell in 1927, the Southwell Diocesan Missionary Council was reconstituted into two separate bodies. The Missionary Studentship Association continued to cover both dioceses until 1933, with the creation of the Derby Diocesan Missionary Studentship Committee. The Studentship Committee, responsible to the Missionary Council, was set up to provide support for people from the diocese who were studying at missionary college. In the decades following the war, the committee struggled to attract applications, and responded by widening its scope. It began to offer support to students at institutions other than missionary colleges (which were being phased out), and funds, including passage money, for foreign candidates coming to the UK for training or attachment to a parish. The committee also considered applicants put forward by the Mothers' Union for training in England or attachment overseas. However, the committee still found it hard to attract applicants, and by the time of the final entry in the minutes in this collection, 1963, the committee was meeting only once a year.
In May 1964, the Council was reconstituted as the Derby Diocesan Missionary and Ecumenical Council. It changed name and form again in 1983, becoming the Diocesan Board for Mission and Unity, and has since become the Diocesan Council for Mission and Unity. |
