| Administrative History | Chesterfield Oxfam Group was founded by a meeting held on 4 June 1964 at the premises of Dents' Chemists, at which a working committee of 10 was formed. The group's aims were to raise funds for Oxfam's charitable activities, and to educate the public. The earliest committee meetings were held at Dents', but they were later held at the Friends' Meeting House in Saltergate, and at the private houses of group members.
The initial meeting was presided over by Peter Briggs, East Midlands Regional Co-ordinator. In 1978, there was a reorganisation of Oxfam's regional structure, and the Chesterfield Group moved from Region 22, (which included other groups in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire) to a new Region 24, based in Barnsley. This region also included Oxfam groups in Belper, Mansfield, Ripley, Buxton, Matlock and Sutton-in-Ashfield. After a further reorganisation, Chesterfield became part of Region 32, covering Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, which was based in Sutton-in-Ashfield. |
