Administrative History | Arthur Bussell moved to Derby from Southampton in 1918, having been given the task of organising the distribution of the Daily Mail to local retailers. The company he founded, A J Bussell and Sons, went on to become a leading independent wholesale distribution company, operating in Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Leicestershire. However, from the 1980s, changes occurred within the industry, as publishers started favouring major companies operating over larger networks. Although this made conditions harder for independent distributors, A J Bussell and Sons stayed in business for a further two decades. The company ceased to trade in 2008.
