Administrative HistoryThe Intelligence Corps which was disbanded after the Great War, was reformed in 1941 and School of Military Intelligence was opened. Smedley's Hydropathic Establishment at Matlock Bank was requisitioned to house the School in this year.

The School offered five courses: the War Intelligence Course; the Field Security Officers Course; and the Field Security Other Ranks Course. in 1943 a Photograph Interpretation Course was added.

The School was administered by officers and staff of other ranks from the Royal Army Service Corps, together with a large number from the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In overall command was the Commandant, then a Brigadier.
