Archive CreatorSir John Port's Charity, Etwall
Administrative HistorySir John Port's Charity was established under a bequest in the will of Sir John Port in 1586. Lands in Etwall, Repton, Willington and other parishes were left under the terms of the will to fund a hospital at Etwall and a school at Repton.

These records concern the legal affairs of the charity including case papers and land transfers.

The principal series of records concerns the court case between Repton School and the Repton Rural District Council in 1917-18. This case concerned an addition made to one of the school's buildings which the council argued was in contravention of local bye-laws. The case was heard at the Court of King Bench, and later at the Court of Appeal. Repton School successfully argued that the bye-laws in question were invalid and thus the case was dismissed at both courts.
Custodial HistoryThese records were donated to Derbyshire Record Office in September 2007, having originally been held by the charity's solicitors Messrs Barber, Currey and Currey of Derby.
