DescriptionThornhill Kirk left Chapel-en-le-Frith for Manchester with his mother, Jane, and sisters, Ada and Amy, six months after the death of his father, William Thornhill Kirk. Four years later, the family moved back from Manchester to live with Thornhill's maternal grandfather, George Hallam, in Chapel-en-le-Frith in June 1895. When Thornhill finished school he got a job at F Trivett's joiners until thew age of 21. He then became a bookkeeper with Town End Foundry in 1906. Two years later he transferred to Mabbott & Co. Ltd. in Manchester. In 1914, craving fresh air and the countryside, he began canvassing for Refuge Assurance Co. in the Buxton and Chapel areas, before enlisting in the Army in the November.

Thornhill married Martha Chapman in June 1924 at the Town End Methodist Church, were his lifelong interest lay. As the Chapman's were promenent supporters of the Primitive Methodist Chapel, the reception was held in the Primitive Methodist schoolroom.
