Title
Advertisement (size 12cm x 12cm) for a medal commercially produced by Mr [James] Taylor, of [71 Summer Lane] Birmingham. The advertisement declares that the medal was approved by the Council of the National Anti-Corn Law League, meeting in Manchester in December 1841
Date
1840s
Description
The Corn Laws, in force in the United Kingdom between 1815 and 1846, imposed restrictions and tariffs on imported grain. The Anti-Corn Law League was a nation-wide political movement advocating free trade.
The medal is described: the obverse shows a starving artisan and family, with symbols of economic depression related to the impact of the Corn Laws; the reverse shows an artisan and family with symbols of a positive economic outlook.
Derbyshire Record Office does not hold an example of such a medal, but an image of one is attached to this catalogue record.
