Archive CreatorGlossop Borough Council
Administrative HistoryAs Glossop grew in the nineteenth century, there was concern that the old system of local government, based on the Howards as Lords of the Manor, the Board of Guardians, Glossop Vestry and the county magistrates, was no longer adequate. In 1864 the process of applying for a borough charter was begun. The Royal Charter which created the Borough of Glossop was issued in October 1866 and the first election took place in December 1866. Under Local Government reorganisation in 1974 Glossop ceased to be a separate borough.
Custodial HistoryThese records were donated by Glossop Library in July 2005.
