Administrative HistoryThe late Jan Victor Derych, from whom these papers originate, was born in Poland in 1923 but came to Britain during World War II. He was involved with the Adult School movement, firstly as a lecturer and subsequently as an official.From 1953, the year he married, Mr Derych was a member of the Lindley Adult School, later becoming its Secretary. He served as Treasurer and President of the Huddersfield Adult School District Committee and trustee of several Adult School charities. Subsequently, he became President and Treasurer of the Yorkshire Adult School Union and a delegate to the Annual National Council. From 1990 to 1991 he was National President and in 1998 was elected an Honorary Member Mr Derych held other public offices, serving as a magistrate for 16 years, and as a member of West Yorkshire Probation Committee, as well as being governor of several schools and of Huddersfield Polytechnic. He was also active in the Labour Party.
