Administrative HistoryThe Charities of Christian, Countess of Devonshire, and William, Earl of Devonshire, were set up under the terms of their respective wills made in 1674 and 1683. Information about the initial provisions of the two wills and their later implementation can be found in the Further Reports of the Commissioners for Inquiring concerning Charities, 1819-1837, pages 604-609.

The Devonshire Charities were later regulated by a scheme set up by the Charity Commissioners in 1891, for the benefit of people in the parishes of Heath, Upper Langwith, Ault Hucknall and Edensor, the hamlets of Stainsby, Hardstoft, Astwith, Rowthorne and Houghton, the township of Shottle and Postern, the township of Pentrich, the liberty of Peak Forest, and the borough of Derby.
Custodial HistoryThe records were deposited in the Derbyshire Record Office in December 2003.
