Administrative HistoryThe Whitworth Institute at Darley Dale, along with Whitworth Hospital were paid for by Lady Whitworth in memory of her husband, Sir Joseph Whitworth. Whitworth was a mechanical engineer, remembered mainly for his system of uniform screw threads. He resided at Stancliffe Hall which he purchased in 1854, and was buried in Darley Dale after his death in 1887.
